The Greycoin Pearl (+4 periapt of wisdom)
A light chain of dull copper links ends in a small pearl that is off colour and grey.
The Greycoins were a well known and respected Halfling family from Corm Orp. Owners of several distilleries and a fine bakery/tavern.
Vorm had several brothers and a sister and took over the family businesses when both parents died of natural causes. The distilleries and tavern were run by his brothers and the bakery by his sister when Umjaa was struck with a terrible illness and was on her death bed for over six months and Vorm elected to stay at her side throughout.
Vorm sold off many of the family’s assets in order to pay for healing and physicians but it took Brindle, a priest of Urogalan, the Halfling deity of earth and death, to succeed but he warned that she would be a changed woman afterwards. Vorm did not care, he wanted her to awaken from her illness so told Brindle to go ahead with his magic.
When she awoken, she was now vacant. Her cheery eyes were dull and lifeless, her warmth now cold and her joy turned to grim apathy.
Vorm was heartbroken and attacked Brindle but was easilly defeated. Bruised but otherwise unharmed, Vorm returned to his home to mourn and Umjaa went with Brindle to his temple in Lurien.
There, she learned the priesthood of Urogalan under Brindle’s tutelage, her emotions fettered and gone and her academic interests lay with necromancy and anatomy.
Vorm wrote every ride hoping she had recovered fully and remembered her heart, but would never receive a reply.
He soon gave up and as one last attempt in 1365, after learning that she had finished her apprenticeship and in the hope she would return to him, he sent her this pearl. At the time it was brilliant white and the polished chain gleamed.
Brindle saw that it was a fine chain and a perfect pearl and that it could hold and enchantment so imbued it with its current magical properties as a gift to his apprentice who saw it as nothing else but a tool to be used with no emotional resonance for her whatsoever.
Over the following years, the pearl lost its brilliance and the chain dulled and Vorm no longer tried to find her.
Umjaa Greycoin was eventually appointed master physician at the Athkatlan jail in Amn. A place where she would have plenty of opportunity to pursue her academic interests.
