The swords of Faerun come in many different shapes and sizes. What follows are just a few of the many types of sword found in the world.
Longsword
Katana – incredibly well crafted slightly curved swords from far off Wa
Kasakara – archaic Amnian straight blade with a spatulate tip
Jian – straight bladed oriental sword from Kara Tur
Spatha – a longer version of the gladius of Chessenta and Tethyr
Estoc – a thrusting, pointed cruciform sword from Sembia
Broadsword –from The Old North and Tethyr sometimes baskethilted (basket-shaped guard that protects the hand)
Schiavona – a basket hilted straight bladed sword from The Pirate Isles and Sword Coast
Illuskan Broadsword – a Sinclair hilted (a kind of basket hilt) straight blade popular with pirates
Great Sword
Claymore – old Illuskan huge blade with extended cross guard also found in The Moonshae and Damara
Bearing Sword – from old Damara and carried across the shoulders like a pole-arm
No Dachi – a horseman’s sword from Wa
Shortsword
Gladius – squat weapon with narrow guard favoured by Chessentan and Tethyrian gladiators
Wakizashi – the shorter sister sword to the katana
Xiphos – straight leaf bladed weapon from Chessenta
Akinaka – square bladed sword popular across the Shining South ages past
Sabina – a short sword/dagger used in everyday life
Cinqueda – Tethyrian fat bladed civilian sword/dagger
Dagger
Tanto – the companion dagger to the wakizashi and katana from Wa
Katar – a punching dagger from Calimshan
Jambiya – a curved dagger from calimshan
Khopesh
Kopis – forward curving sword from ancient Mulhorrand
Harpe – a sickle sword from ancient Chessenta and Mulhorrand
Falchion – large, single edged two handed sword
Scimitar
Dao/Butterfly sword – flared, curved blade from Kara Tur
Saif – slender bladed scimitar from Calimshan
Makhaira – straight backed sword from Chessenta
Falcata – forward curving sword from ancient Amn
Szabla – slender curved sabre from Vassa
Pulwar – from far off Malatra, this is a sabre with forward curving quillions and a sickled head
Talwar/Shamshir/Kilij – from Malatra, this sabre has a short hilt
