Archerbane (+3 Heavy Steel Shield of Arrow Deflection)
A round shield of polished steel inlaid with red enamel depiction of a wyvern coiled about a sword at its centre. The outer edge is engraved with angular patterns that swirl towards the center.
Crafted in 1160DR by the Royal Armourer Cathlan Venamar of Impiltur, the shield was commissioned by the Knights of Imphras and gifted to Erecar of Sarshel who was the hand of the Queen Ilmara, mother of Imphras II. She continued to rule as regent until the Year of the Immoral Imp (1185 DR), when Imphras II was crowned king after he reached sixteen years of age, again according to Impilturan law. In time, King Imphias II wed Lasheela of Dilpur, and they had two sons: Talryn (born in 1188 DR) and Lashilmbrar (born in 1190 DR). After years of illness, Lasheela died of a wasting disease in the Year of Private Tears (1204 DR), and Erecar was at her side as she passed.
Seen as old and unable to perform his duties, Imphras removed Erecar from his service though granted title of Lord and given lands and a modest castle as reward for his service to the King’s mother.
Erecar did not take this well and felt that he still had many years ahead of him so took the forced retirement as an insult. He threw his shield at Imphras’ feet and stormed out of the hall never to be seen again.
It is thought that he wandered the north for a while before dying in exile somewhere in Damara.
In 1225, a knight called Erecale claiming to be Erecar’s son, came to Imphras’ court and swore service to the throne. He was given the shield as his birthrite and entered service as a Lord Commander of the Warswords.
This was frowned upon by the other knights as this Erecale was the bastard of an exile. Named the Bastard Knight behind his back, Erecale took the name and embraced it declaring that “Do not judge us so harshly for many are a bastard’s brothers and sisters”.
Erecale was slain in 1253DR while leading a quest into a demon cyst. Though the demon within were slain, Erecale and most of his force and their bodies were lost.
This shield surfaced again in 1259 in Northern Tethyr when the Matriarch of House Mallyth, a noble house of Tethyr that has since fallen, gifted the shield to the Castellan of Castle Drake; Petar Escalla.
Petar had served The Great Drake Discani Ortoli, a paladin of Torm loyally and had lost an eye in defence of Discani’s wife (and the daughter of Mallyth’s Matriarch) when they were attacked on the road by a horde of ogres.
The shield was still in his possession when Castle Drake fell around 1260DR and it was thought to still lay in the dust of that ruin until it turned up still in the hands of Petar Escalla who had since been turned into a swordwraith.
