“Glymdrad” +2 Everbright Longsword
The brilliant blade glows with an unnatural brightness that reflects vivid colours; a spectrum of light and patterns when held to the sun. Flecks of marble and pearl shimmer across this weapon, set with images of bursting stars and beaming suns. The cross guard is a plain silver bar, the hilt is wrapped in soft white leather and the fuller and chappe are inlaid with white enamel.
Forged around 50Dr, this blade was bequeathed to Marcus Greywyrm, a noble and honest knight of Helm. His various crusades saw him challenge and defeat a great many evils across the North until he stumbled upon a nefarious plot by a Mystran cult that would bring Helm low and possibly even destroy the deity. The cult had somehow acquired ancient lore and magic that was directly related to Karsus’s Avatar – the very same spell that destroyed Mystryl during the Fall of Nether. With this same magic, they hoped to destroy Helm. It seems that the cult had fortold the death of Mystra at the hands of Helm during the Time of Troubles so worked to change the future by destroying the Vigilant God.
Thankfully, Marcus found their tower and stormed it with 101 knights –In the great battle that follows, Marcus and his knights were pummelled with powerful spells which reduced some to powder, changed others to stone and sent other knights to other planes. Some were simply burned with great fireballs or slain with a single word of power. Somehow, Marcus remained untouched by the spells that were cast at him but as he hacked his way through the lair, his body soaking up spell after spell with little effect other than to make him more determined. But as plunged Glymdrad into the heart of the last of the mages and ended their plot, all of the spells that had struck him suddenly effected him simultaneously and he was first sent to the shadow plane then utterly destroyed in a conflagration of magical energies.
It is thought that the twenty or so knights that survived would go on to later split into three factions The Sword, The Shield and The Helm. The schism came about when the knights could not agree on what to do with the research and spells that the mages had been working on – some thought that this ancient Netherese magic should be destroyed, others thought it should be kept hidden and a third faction felt that it should be researched and used against the enemies of Helm and the innocent.
It is unknown what was agreed on in the end and which faction got their way. If this was known, then scholars would be aware of the fate of Karsus’ Avatar spell research and be able to unlock any number of ancient Netherese secrets.
Several hundred years passed and pieces of Marcus’ armour began washing up on the Sword Coast. The armour was sought and taken to Zazesspur where knights of the Sword, Shield and Helm got together to rebuild the armour and consecrate it as a new altar. The suit of full plate was battered and scorched but is more or less intact but for a missing left gauntlet, pauldron and cuisse which the knights still look for.
Glymdrad on the other hand was thought to have been found on the plane of shadow, its glow still penetrating the darkness there, and returned to Cormyr in 1374 through a portal by unknown adventurers. These adventurers apparently met their end somewhere in Amn later that year.
The church of Helm has since venerated Marcus and recognised him as a saint.
An everbright weapon can flash with a brilliant light twice per day at your command.
When it is activated, all creatures within 20 feet of you are blinded for 1 round (Reflex DC 14 negates). An everbright weapon is also immune to acid damage and rusting effects.
