Argentul’s Amulet of Inter-dimensional Bridging (Amulet of The Planes)
This heavy amulet is black iron and set with many gemstones about the periphery of differing types and colours each one glowing or pulsing with planar energies when activated. It has a few knocks and scratches and some of the corners have been slightly melted.
This amulet dates back to around (-359DR) during The Golden Age of Nether and about a century before the fall. It was created by the artificer Argentul Rimidus who was a High Magister of Orbedal, also known as Sanctuary.
Originally a city in Low Netheril, its military took part in the cleansing of the ruins of Cantus in -2811 DR. Two centuries later, however, the city became one of Netheril's flying enclaves The enclave was established to promote non-violent behavior among the Netherese.
Taking up position over the Cold Forest, Orbedal quickly became a magical haven for pacifists and arcanists who wanted to get on with their magical research without worrying about rivals or the politicking common to other enclaves. They traded with Ascore, their traditional allies, and made sure that orcs didn't come to reside in the forest below. The amulet was created to aid Argentul in his affairs with merchants on other planes, including The Mercane.
Orbedal's last ruler was Rhaugilath the Ageless, an arch-lich arcanist.
In the Year of Sundered Webs, −339 DR, Netheril suffered Karsus's Folly and all magic failed. Orbedal suffered the same fate as the majority of its sister-enclaves, and fell from the sky. It crashed to ground in the Troll Hills on the distant Sword Coast.
Some months after the fall of Netheril, the lich archwizard Larloch, who had survived the disaster, discovered the ruins of the enclave. He claimed the city as his own and began re-purposing part of it to serve as his home, constructing himself a crypt out of its broken towers. After he was done, he began exploring the rest of the ruins. Years later, he discovered Rhaugilath, Argentul’s master, who was larloch’s rival when they both led enclaves. Rhaugilath and Argentul were still "alive", preserved via phylacterys, but trapped in a subterranean pocket in the rubble. Larloch and Rhaungilath fought fiercely but Argentul took the opportunity to flee using the amulet to escape to another plane.
Larloch won, enslaving Rhaugilath. He became the first of Larloch's lich servitors.
Argentul in the meantime came to Thay where he allied himself with several Thayan Tharches (Rulers) knowing that his master would be angry for his cowardice and would come looking for him.
Indeed, Argentul’s betrayal caught up with him and one night in 1321DR, a Kastighur demon came for him. The Thayans attempted to protect Argentul but ultimately failed and an entire tower was destroyed in the fight. Argentul was carried off to his master to meet his doom, the Kastighur has snatched the amulet and tossed it aside to stop him from escaping.
As the dust settled, a Thayan wizard called Sushruhem Tarm found the amulet in the rubble of the tower and took it away to study it. Around three or four years later, he failed to control the amulet and was sent to the elemental plane of fire where he was thought to have perished and the amulet with him.
