Morncairn’s Scarlet Mantle (+5 cloak of resistance)
This luxurious cloak is made of thick dark red and russet wool and trimmed with deep scarlet fur about its neck and hem. The deep hood has a pointed crest and fastened by a brass buckle engraved with swirling flames and set with a ruby.
The benign artificer Rimvist Liriz from The Nelanther isles created this coat by order of Morncairn, the Duke of The Black Crag in 1151. It was a gift for his queen Arrasotel Deiti Noraani.
Arrasotel wore the cloak gladly and courted Morncairn for a while but she descended into great evil, feasting on human flesh and praying to dark gods. Her people turned against her and Morncairn was torn. He desperately tried to turn her back to the path of good but she took offence and had him beheaded for his gaul, his headless body dragged through the streets behind a maddened donkey.
In 1181 she was killed by a booby trap hidden inside a gold dragon egg that was sent to her by an unknown admirer, a noble called Vismirt Cadere. The egg was a fake, made of wood and bone and it is thought that the noble who sent it was in fact an inventive local who wanted to see an end to her murderous rule. Cadere is an ancient Illuskan word meaning “Revenge”. If her court knew this, they kept it to themselves. Some believe that Vismirt was actually Rimvist, both names being anagrams of each other.
The people raided her castle and burned her body on the highest tower, her cloak and other treasures scattered to the winds, much of it sold to help rebuild all that she had destroyed.
